Consumer Affairs Commission
Grocery and petrol price comparison, open price data and consumer complaint filing
By Consumer Affairs Commission
What it does
The Consumer Affairs Commission is the agency under the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce responsible for consumer protection and fair trading in Jamaica. Its site is built around price transparency: a comparison tool lets a shopper look up surveyed grocery and petrol prices in their area, and an open data repository publishes the underlying datasets for grocery prices, petrol prices and textbook pricing.
The Commission runs regular surveys of grocery items, agricultural produce and retail meats, plus an annual school textbook survey, and the results feed both the comparison tool and the datasets. Consumers can also file a complaint about unfair treatment by a vendor through the site.
Publications include consumer alerts, the Consumer Matters newsletter, educational guides, annual reports, press releases and cost of living material such as the Eating Right when Money Tight recipe resource. The head office is at 17-19 Connolley Avenue, Kingston, with branches in Montego Bay and Mandeville. All of it is free to use.
