What it does

The Institute of Jamaica, founded in 1879, is the state body holding the country's cultural, artistic and scientific collections. Its divisions include the National Gallery of Jamaica, the National Museum Jamaica, the Natural History Museum of Jamaica, the Jamaica Music Museum, Liberty Hall which covers the Marcus Garvey legacy, and the African Caribbean Institute with the Jamaica Memory Bank.

The site provides online access to those holdings through a virtual museum, the Jamaica Memory Bank archive, and a searchable library catalogue covering rare books and archival material. Physical and virtual exhibitions are listed as they open, and research support through the Institute's libraries is described.

Publications are produced and sold through the Institute, including the Jamaica Journal, the 76 King Street magazine, exhibition catalogues and heritage books. It also administers the Musgrave Awards for literature, science and the arts, and runs school, family and outreach cultural programmes. The Institute is at 10 to 16 East Street, Kingston. Online collections are free; publications and museum admission are paid.
